CT, X-ray and ultrasound in Yerevan: what the state pays and what you pay

We opened the price lists of six clinics and set them beside the state-programme tariffs. For ultrasound the gap is three to five times; for CT, one and a half to two. And for some studies the price depends not on the machine but on who performs them.

What the state pays

The programme tariff is the same across the country: it depends on neither the clinic nor the city. Note the X-ray line — payment is by film size, not by organ.

Fund data as of 24 August 2026. “Available at” is how many of the 156 Medaro-catalogue organisations whose tariffs we downloaded from the fund’s website offer the service (including Emergency Short-term Hospitalization tariffs; for MRI only the planned tariff is counted — with the emergency ones it would be 25). As of 29 September 2026 the fund’s list has 517 medical organisations in total (584 addresses), so nationwide there are more such places.

What it costs at the desk

We opened the price lists of six Yerevan clinics and wrote out the same studies. Names in the table are shortened; the exact wording is on the pages, links at the end.

Clinic prices are a snapshot of 15 September 2026. Wigmore publishes a range, not a single figure. At Astghik the abdominal line is broader: it also covers the pelvis and urinary tract, and there is no separate line for the abdomen alone.

Contrast is charged separately

This is the most common surprise at the cash desk. At Astghik the contrast agent is a separate 30,000-dram line added to the study itself: CT of one area at 40,000 plus 30,000 for contrast is already 70,000, while the fund pays 35,000 for a contrast CT. At Vardanants, a single-area study with bolus contrast costs 55,000 drams.

The price depends on who performs it

A finding we did not expect. At Astghik the same ultrasound costs different amounts depending on the doctor, and it says so in the price list: thyroid ultrasound with the head of service is 15,000 drams, with other doctors 12,000. Abdominal ultrasound: 20,000 with the head of service versus 15,000. At Vardanants the same principle appears differently — through the machine and the specialist: breast ultrasound “with a premium-class sonographer” and “with a mammologist” are both 15,000 drams.

There is nothing wrong with this: the clinic states plainly what it charges more for. What is wrong is that someone who does not know this never asks at the desk and learns about the difference only when paying.

Ultrasound: the biggest gap

Echocardiography is the only study in this table where the fund tariff and the lower end of the price lists coincide. On Vardanants’ cardiology page there are two identically named lines, “Echocardiography (EchoCG)”, at 7,000 and 15,000 drams; the site does not explain the difference, so we take the higher figure and advise checking when booking.

MRI is the narrowest bottleneck

Of the 156 organisations in our database only 16 do planned MRI (25 counting Emergency Short-term Hospitalization tariffs), against 45 with CT and 83 with ultrasound. In the fund’s full list (517 medical organisations as of 29 September 2026) MRI is rare too: only 17 offer one-area MRI on a 1.5 Tesla machine. The price gap is widest here too: the fund pays 35,000 drams for one area on a 1.5 Tesla machine, while at Astghik the same field strength costs 80,000, a 3 Tesla machine costs 100,000, and contrast adds another 30,000.

What to ask at the reception desk

  • Is the contrast agent included in the quoted price, or is it a separate line?
  • How many areas are you paying for: a CT price grows with each zone.
  • Who performs the study — in some clinics the price depends on it.
  • Are the film or the results disc included: sometimes they are charged separately.
  • If you are on the state programme: in the fund tariffs we analysed (156 organisations, 24 August 2026) there was no co-payment on any CT, MRI, ultrasound or X-ray entry. Consultations with specialists are another matter — a co-payment is allowed for 126 of 149 such services, so it is worth asking in advance.

One last thing. The clinic prices in this piece are a snapshot taken on 15 September 2026 from the clinics’ own websites. Price lists change; check the amount with the place you are actually going to before your visit.

When an article is not the answer — call 103

With these signs you do not look up prices or book a test; you call an ambulance.

  • A head injury with loss of consciousness, vomiting or slurred speech
  • Sudden chest or abdominal pain that does not pass
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing up blood
  • An open fracture or a limb deformed after a fall
