What a general practitioner does

A general practitioner (clinics in Armenia call this doctor a “therapist”) is the first doctor adults see: with a fever or a cold that drags on, a cough, high blood pressure, weakness, stomach pain, or test results that need explaining. The GP examines you, orders tests and judges whether a specialist such as a cardiologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist or neurologist is needed. A child with the same complaints should see a pediatrician. Bring earlier test and scan results and discharge papers from any hospital stay, and jot down any long-term medication.

Frequently asked questions

Which complaints should I take to a GP, and when can I go straight to a specialist?

See a GP when it is unclear which specialist you need, or when several things bother you at once: weakness, fever, cough, blood pressure, stomach pain. People go straight to a specialist when the reason is obvious: eyesight to an ophthalmologist, teeth to a dentist, a skin rash to a dermatologist. The articles in Symptoms and conditions suggest which doctor to start with for a particular symptom.

What is the difference between a GP and a family doctor?

Both are primary care doctors you register with at a polyclinic. Adults register with a GP from the age of 18, while people of any age, children included, can register with a family doctor. The reasons to go are almost the same: both examine you, order tests and refer you to specialists. The directory keeps a separate list of family doctors.

Can I see a GP for free under state health insurance?

Yes, if you are insured: a visit to the polyclinic GP you are registered with is part of the state insurance package. With the GP’s referral, the insurance also pays for tests and specialist consultations, within a yearly limit of visits and with a co-payment for some doctors. Who is covered now, where to look up your status and how to activate the certificate is explained on the State insurance page.

How much does a GP consultation cost at a private clinic?

No GP in this list has a consultation price from a clinic price list on their page yet — ask the clinic’s front desk what a visit costs.

About this list

This list covers doctors whom Vanadzor clinics name on their own websites: currently 4 doctors from 2 clinics. The list is incomplete and keeps growing; each card leads to a page with the practice location and the clinic’s phone number.

Cards where the clinic lists experience, education or a consultation price come first, then the rest. Within each group, cards with a photo come first. This is not a ranking: places in the list are not for sale. How we collect and check information

Doctors of related specialties are in the list above.

Medaro is a directory: we do not make diagnoses or recommend a particular doctor. Information about doctors comes from clinic websites, and for some doctors from a saved copy of the site or a letter from the clinic; before your visit, check the appointment and the cost with the clinic.
