What a gastroenterologist does

A gastroenterologist deals with the digestive organs — the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. People come when stomach pain keeps returning or follows meals, with heartburn, belching and bloating, or with constipation or diarrhea that has gone on for weeks. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are often done by a separate doctor, an endoscopist, while hemorrhoids and anal fissures are a matter for a proctologist. Bring any earlier abdominal ultrasound and gastroscopy reports, and note which foods make things worse.

Frequently asked questions

Gastritis: should I see a gastroenterologist or a general practitioner?

Either is a fine place to start. If the symptoms are new, a general practitioner can examine you and work out whether you need tests, an ultrasound or a specialist. If your stomach has troubled you for a long time or you have already had a gastroscopy, it makes more sense to book a gastroenterologist directly. If you decide to start with a GP, here is the list of general practitioners.

Where can I get a gastroscopy or colonoscopy, and how much does it cost?

Both are done in the endoscopy rooms of clinics and hospitals, and whether you need one, and which, is decided by a doctor — most often a gastroenterologist or a proctologist. The cash price depends on the clinic and on whether the procedure is done under anesthesia: prices from Yerevan clinic price lists and what state insurance covers are in our article on gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Is there a pediatric gastroenterologist?

Pediatric gastroenterologists are not a separate list in the directory. Whether the doctor you pick sees young patients, and from which age, is worth checking by phone with the clinic before the visit. For a child’s stomach pain, constipation or diarrhea, families usually start with a pediatrician, who refers on to a gastroenterologist when that is needed.

How much does a gastroenterologist appointment cost?

19 of the 86 gastroenterologists in this list have a consultation price from the clinic’s price list on their page, dated when the list was taken; for the others, ask the clinic. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy appear as separate lines in the price list.

How do I choose a gastroenterologist?

Medaro does not rate doctors or recommend a particular one. Compare what the card lists — work experience, education, practice location, languages and the consultation price if there is one — and ask the clinic about what the page does not show, such as the earliest appointment date.

About this list

This list covers doctors whom Yerevan clinics name on their own websites: currently 86 doctors from 34 clinics. The list is incomplete and keeps growing; each card leads to a page with the practice location and the clinic’s phone number. There are no such doctors from other Armenian cities in the directory yet.

The districts with the most doctors on this list are Kanaker-Zeytun (37), Kentron (15), and Arabkir (13). The list includes 68 women and 15 men — you can choose with the “Gender” filter.

Cards where the clinic lists experience, education or a consultation price come first, then the rest. Within each group, cards with a photo come first. This is not a ranking: places in the list are not for sale. How we collect and check information

Doctors of related specialties are in the list above.

Medaro is a directory: we do not make diagnoses or recommend a particular doctor. Information about doctors comes from clinic websites; before your visit, check the appointment and the cost with the clinic.
